Data Science

The digitization of the economy and society and the development of artificial intelligence with the underlying machine learning techniques are changing lives. It is therefore advantageous to adapt to these changes in order to keep up with them and to be able to use them optimally in your business, professional or private life. This requires data analysis skills, which viewsandinsights.com wants to convey through freely accessible educational videos. In addition, we want to inform the interested public about the results of our research and use our data analyses to contribute to the discussion of current issues of our time.

Expertise

Viewsandinsights.com is headed by Dr. Uwe Engel. Uwe Engel is a retired professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the University of Bremen, where he headed the sociology department with a focus on statistics and empirical social research at the Institute of Sociology for more than twenty years from 2000 to 2020.

He is the founding director of the Social Science Methods Center at the University of Bremen, which he also led from its founding in 2007 until his retirement on September 30, 2020.

Previously, he was Professor of Social Structure Analysis at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Potsdam and a research assistant at the Department of Philosophy, Religious Studies and Social Sciences at the University of Duisburg, where he also received the venia legendi for sociology in 1993.

The Methods Center is responsible for compulsory and elective training in statistics and methods of empirical social research at the Department of Social Sciences. Many of the basic lectures in statistics and methods held over the years have since been freely accessible online as mobile lectures. The same applies to a small series in data science. Our current video series on machine learning and data science in social research can be found on our video portal on vimeo.com (vimeo.com/viewsandinsights).

From 2008 to 2013, Uwe Engel coordinated the priority program 1292 "Survey Methodology" of the German Research Foundation. His long-term research focuses on survey methodology, data science, statistical modeling and applied social research (experiments, surveys). Current research interests include social human-robot interaction, the sociology of artificial intelligence and value research. Uwe is a founding member of the European Association of Methodology (EAM) and the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences. In 1986, he received his doctorate in philosophy (Dr. phil.) from the Leibniz University of Hanover with a dissertation on multivariate data analysis in status inconsistency research.
